1KA Survey Invitation System
A complex system for sending survey invites via email and other channels
2023
1KA's invitation system lets researchers send out surveys through three channels: individual access codes, individual URLs, and email invites. Email is by far the most used. The system also tracks invite progress and invitee activity, so the full scope covers both sending flows and monitoring views.
The redesign had been attempted before. A colleague wrote a 96-page master's thesis on it. The boss wasn't satisfied with the result and handed it to me instead. I inherited what existed and spent more time on this than any other project at 1KA.
The core constraint was backwards compatibility. Researchers had existing invitation histories that had to remain readable in the new design, which ruled out certain structural decisions that would have otherwise been straightforward. The complexity of three distinct channels, each with its own flow, had to resolve into something that didn't feel like three separate tools bolted together.
After a year of work, it finally shipped.
